Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability

How Pawleys Island Hammocks Does Its Part in Responsible Management of the Environment

Being a Good Steward for the Environment is defined as the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one's stewardship of natural resources, a phrase championed daily here at Pawleys Island Hammocks.

Environmental Stewardship's mantra is to consume less, reduce waste and shift to environmentally preferable materials.

It All Started from the Beginning

“When we started Pawleys Island Hammocks, we were practicing Environmental Stewardship without even realizing it”, says Walter Perkins III, CEO. “My father, Walter Perkins Jr., would save bands that came with the yarn to weave our hammocks and would then in turn use them on the boxes he would ship the hammocks in. He would find whatever he could, even dumpster dive to save a dollar. Saving everything and wasting nothing was and still is in our DNA.” "One man's trash is another man's treasure."

“One man's trash is another man's treasure”

Whether you call it sustainability, green initiative, recycling, or just good old common sense, we all need to be good stewards of our environment. If everybody does a little better every day, then it will make a huge impact. That is our environmental focus. Do better every day. First task, find waste and eliminate it. If you can not eliminate it, then figure out how to reuse it. If you can not figure out how to reuse it, then figure out how to recycle it.

Recognizing the importance of reducing the use of hazardous and other waste materials, Pawleys Island Hammocks has implemented various initiatives to reduce our environmental footprint.

HDPE Furniture

Our Pawleys Island Hammocks HDPE Furniture is Green Circle Certified. We use recycled HDPE in all of our lumber for our furniture. One Adirondack chair keeps milk jugs and other recyclable materials from ending up in the landfill. One chair keeps the HDPE plastic waste of 8 families for one year from going to the landfill. We are taking a one-use plastic product and giving it new life for many years of enjoyment. After those years of enjoyment, it is again ready to be recycled.

LED Lighting

”Turn the lights off when you leave the room”, “Close the door to save heat”...these were the words of our parents and grandparents when we were growing up. We have motorized overhead doors with remote controls for our forklift drivers to “close the door” when they leave a heated or air-conditioned space. We have converted our lighting in our warehouse and offices to high efficiency LED lighting cutting our energy needs every month. So even when we need the lights, we are using less energy.

In-House Recycling Program

All recyclable materials used by our employees are separated from normal waste and recycled weekly. Reducing the amount of waste we send to landfills and reducing the need for other companies to collect raw materials in the future.

Going Digital

We've replaced all our paper printing tickets with digital scanners, reducing the amount of paper we consume daily.

Corrugated Cardboard

Corrugated cardboard is used in the packaging of most of our products. This is thick cardboard with an extra layer of wavy fiber in between sheets. The extra layer makes it stronger and a great option for packing our boxes. Corrugated cardboard is biodegradable and contains no dyes or bleaches, so it can be composted and recycled effectively.

Powder-Coating

At Pawleys Island Hammocks, our Tri-Beam® Metal Hammock Stands are powder-coated via electrostatic application. Not only does it produce a thick finish that is harder and more durable than wet paint, but it is also better for the environment. Powder-coating compared to wet paint produces minimal volatile organic compounds and leaves no excess waste in dripping paint.

Sustainable Wood

Our Wood meets and exceeds the laws and practices of sustainably managed forests. These forests are kept healthy by protecting clean water, wildlife habitats and are continually replanted.

Recycled Pillow Fill

Our pillow fill is composed of recycled plastic bottles. It comes to us in bales of fiber and we use advanced machinery to break up the fibers and make them soft and give them loft to make our quality pillows and swings. What was headed to the landfill after one use is now a comfortable pillow.

Everyday choices here at Pawleys Island Hammocks are made to reduce our environmental footprint and the use of natural resources for the long-term. The sustainability of our products is an important part of our future, and continual improvement is who we are.
